We know that some of you might be staying in the Philadelphia area for a bit longer and we'd be terrible hosts if we didn't point out a few interesting things to do in the area. We've tried to keep things inside the city limits, so you won't have to rent a car to see things. We know everyone has a different idea of interesting, so here are some options based on what you're into:
For the Beer Lover:
Philly is a great place for beer! VisitPhilly.com has put together a great guide to doing a brewery tour in the Philadelphia area. You can check it out here: Beer Tour.
If you're not interested in breweries, but just want some variety or a good bar to throw back a few, you still have some great choices. Monk's has a great selection of beer and awesome mussels. McGillin's Olde Ale House has been open since 1860 and is an iconic bar when it comes to Philadelphia.
For those that prefer wine, Tria Café Rittenhouse and Vintage offer some great wine and food.
For the Foodies:
Philly has something for everyone, from the classics like Cheesesteaks, Pretzels, and TastyCakes to more upscale dining options.
If you want the traditional tourist fare, head down to Pat's or Geno's for a cheesesteak. You can find soft pretzels almost everywhere and TastyCakes will be on most shelves.
If you want a higher-end experience, check out some of Philly's top chefs. Jose Garces (Amada), Morimoto (Morimoto), Michael Solomonov (Zahav), Stephen Starr (Butcher and Singer), and Marc Vetri (Vetri) are all worth it.
Finally, make sure you head over to Reading Terminal Market to take in the bustling lunchtime scene. You won't be disappointed.
For the History Buff:
Philly is old. No doubt about it. Here are some awesome things that came from being there when it all started.
- Independence Hall
- Liberty Bell
- Betsy Ross House
- National Constitution Center
- Elfreth's Alley
- Eastern State Penitentiary
- Independence Visitor's Center
- Mutter Museum
For the Artist:
You can get your fill of culture by sticking to two main streets.
On the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, there are some great museums like the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Rodin Museum, and the Barnes Foundation. For the kid in you, there's the Franklin Institute with tons of science exhibits and the Academy of Natural Sciences.
On Broad Street, just south of City Hall, you might be able to take in something with a bit mf yore sound or motion at the Kimmel Center or The Wilma Theater.
For the Nature Lover:
Maybe you just want some fresh air...
If you're feeling very adventurous, you can see if you can squeeze in some of the Schuylkill River Trail or go for a walk along the Schuylkill Banks Boardwalk. You could borrow a bike from an Indego station and ride past the Art Museum, the old Water Works, and Boat House Row. .
If you're looking for winter fun, the Blue Cross River Rink on the Delaware Waterfront and the Rothman Ice Rink in Dilworth Plaza are always fun.
